Because There Are Some Overnight Stays That Are Unplanned....
The Great Lakes Chapter of ASTA is taking up a collection of unused toiletries to donate to the local Salvation Army.
To see how your donations will be utilized, please read below:
"The Salvation Army has faithfully served eastern Michigan for well over 125-years, providing more than 3 million nutritious meals and 736,000 night of shelter to Metro Detroiters last year.
Your thoughtful gift will be utilized in our homeless shelter and residential services programs for individuals and families who have no means to provide basic needs. In addition, The Salvation Army provides 3,000 to 5,000 meals a day, 365 days a year, from the Bed & Bread program, serving homeless and at risk individuals and family in their neighborhood around the greater metro Detroit via canteen trucks. Throughout the year, The Salvation Army extends additional items including, hats, gloves, blankets, socks, and toiletries.
The Salvation Army could not do this without the generous support from faithful partners like Great Lakes Chapter of American Society of Travel Agents."
~Captain Jamie Winkler, Director of Eastern Michigan Harbor Light System (Southeast Michigan / Detroit Area)
"I appreciate your willingness to work with The Salvation Army Social Services of Kent County. We are excited about this opportunity!
The Salvation Army Social Services has three primary programs including an emergency food pantry, housing program, and utility assistance program.
The personal care items will primarily be distributed through the food pantry and some through our housing program.
Our organization serves people that are often lost in the system. The majority of these households are often below 100% of the Federal Poverty level and are very vulnerable. Most of the households that we see are often struggling with multiple basic needs.
Our emergency food pantry provides well balanced food orders that last households 3 to 5 days. Households often request personal care items while visiting the pantry.
Our pantry serves 400-450 households per month which is about 1,200 individuals.
Our Housing Assessment Program (HAP) serves between 250-300 households per month that come into the office who are homeless or who are imminently at risk of being homeless".
